Drawing: 3 tries

Last week i decided to try drawing a pitcher.  My first attempt looked nice but not much like the subject.  So i tried again a couple of days later.  The shape was a little more realistic, but i still couldn’t figure out how to draw the highlights.  (Note: For each session I set up the pitcher on a table,  sitting on top of white paper.  I shined lamp light on the pitcher so i could practice drawing shadows and highlights — and there were quite a few of each.). For the second session i thought maybe if i added in a darker background around the pitcher the highlights would show up.  but no. Anyhow, so i decided to try yet a third time — today.  It’s a little better: the highlights on the body of the pitcher are beginning to come through; but the ones on the lip of the pitcher do not.  I’ve had it with this pitcher at this point. I’m going to try something next that is not so light, and perhaps I’ll be better able to figure things out.

Hi Judy. It looks as if you were looking at the top of the pitcher from above and the side of the pitcher from the side. The photograph shows a very narrow angle on the opening at the top of the pitcher while your drawings show a much wider one. With this angle on the top, I think the bottom curve should be more pronounced to reflect the shape as seen from above. What do you think?

Thank you so much for the care you took in studying my efforts! And you are probably right. I should say, though, that the photo i posted of the pitcher is one i took after one of the drawing sessions, and i paid no attention to the angle — was just thinking about the viewer getting an idea of the subject. So i’m going to post a new photo of the pitcher which i think is closer to what i was actually seeing when i was drawing. Doesn’t change the issues and where i missed the mark, but it at least gives you a more accurate idea of what i was trying to do.

Your patience to make a go at it three time is impressive. All good outcomes by the way. Its helpful for me to remember that the curved opening and base of a pitcher are flatter in the back and more round / deep in the front. Don’t get me wrong, the outcome is still marginal when I do it, but it’s less crappy. Small victories.

On the flip side it’s nice to see you’re already in the holiday spirit. Maybe next time fill it with some gluwein…
