Reflections and grasses

I’ve been working past week or two on the grasses on the left side of the painting and on the reflections of the mountain and trees in the water. Also gave some attention to glazing over the small rocks in the stream that are supposed to be underwater. Probably did 5 or 6 layers of very thin glazes, using darker hues in some areas and lighter in others. Issues with the grasses involved improving color and brush strokes, in relation to perspective. this required multiple re-do’s, but I think i am getting closer to what I’d like this part of hte painting to look like. as for the reflections, i repainted those several times — turning the painting sideways, and upside down, trying to get both the shapes and the hues to “work”.

A lesson learned

As i think I indicated in a recent posting, I have been working almost all at home on this current painting.  This is partly because we didnt’ have class for a couple of weeks.  However, as i was getting ready to do some glazing over my pebbles, i wanted to get input from teacher.  Told her my plan; she said go ahead with it; i did, and it was a mess. Turned out that the medium i use for the painting itself — walnut oil — which i like a lot — cannot be used for glazing. It doesn’t stick with the paint; drips all over the canvas: it’s a mess!  I needed to use Liquin, which i do not like for painting — but which works like a charm for creating a glaze.  So a couple of days later, after i’d Gotten some Liquin, i tried it.  So far only one layer, but i think it’ll be ok.  Lesson learned.

Meanwhile i needed to repaint the reflection of the mountain in the water.  Made a try at that.  I think it’s better but still doesn’t “read” quite right.  Now doing another round of painting the trees so that : (a) they look less stick-like; and (b) so that i can emphasize how the light hits differently on the left and right sides of the canvas.

I didn’t get around to working on the  grassses (left side of painting), to make them more realistic, but not too much so.

The large rock on the right hand side of the painting has had almost no work — Just one layer, with a little shading.  I plan to go back to that this week.61C1F653-0831-421E-8516-BD44DF904A15.jpeg

Planning for water and underwater

72AFC2C3-B367-4464-8C2F-6199A9A33292I’ve been working kind of all over the place past week on this painting.  I gave the sky another layer.  Also touched up the mountains.  I did another layer for the reflection of the mountain in the water, but now need to make it look like a reflection. The field of grass is still a work in progress, so i’ll Try to make more progress on it this week.  The shoreline got some attention, with attempts at making stuff look more three-dimensional.  All that said, my real fun came in getting ready to do the underwater substrate, pebbles and small rocks.  And there are a LOT of very small rocks!  I’ve not painted nearly enough.  But with what’s there, you can perhaps imagine how it will look when i paint the “water” above.  This will be via a glaze , or two, or three — we’ll see!
