Haven’t been able to even think much about painting the past few weeks — we were away for a week and then had company for a week. Now getting back into the swing of things. Before my break, i had selected a new subject and had decided that i want to paint this subject twice: once with the same kind of impressionistic/abstract form in which i did the Icelandic Houses; and once returning to realism. I did a free form charcoal and terps drawing of the scene. Yesterday and today i worked on beginning the first painting of the two i plan to do. I attach here the photo from which i’m working; the drawing; and my beginning phase with the painting.
This seems like a very stark landscape with no water visible. It’s a surprising choice for you. I will be interested to see how it evolves.

It is stark, and that is part of what appealed to me. That, and the challenge of getting the gradations in color/value of the mountain. I decided it was ok to work from a photo that had no water, and see how it feels to concentrate on something else. Thanks for your comment!

Looks like a scene that needs a pterodactyl circling the cliffs. Fun!
