“Impressionism 101” cont. – adding color

This week at home i worked on the water reflections.  Also added more color to the sunset and part of the sky.  In class we began painting in color on the buildings.  I was hoping this teacher’s instruction around this would clarify for me how what we are doing is impressionistic.  He continues to say Impressionism is all about light and brush strokes.  that is, brush strokes would all be short.  The thing is, these buildings are so small, (canvas itself is only 9” x 12”) and the area around the windows and doors is so small that i am using a small (#2) brush, and there is no way to make long strokes anywhere except in the sky and water.  So i decided well, ok, my contribution to being impressionistic would be in part to make the buildings more colorful than in the original.

I added a glaze to the water reflections to bring out the orange color more.  Still not thrilled with how blue the water is, but i’m Leaving it alone for now.6F2AE9FE-312C-4919-972F-C1F562778EA3.jpeg

Mom, Love this piece. Following are my comments, which I couldn’t post on the site because the site is a bear to use. FYI, your site continues to block me (and other I imagine) from viewing the blog post saying it’s marked private. I have to log-in to WordPress, navigate to your site, scroll to the post, and then I can leave comments. I’m not complaining, just letting you know if people aren’t posting comments or viewing the posts, they might simply not be able to access it easily.

Regardless, the painting is looking fabulous!

————- I love this piece! I’m not sure if this will help, but I’ve always thought of impressionistic as a “don’t sweat the details” mindset.

The blue in the water works really well b/c it balances the composition with the blue domes. And that sky, wow!
